NT-proANP a biomarker in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia, with an estimated 1 in 4 adults expected to develop it during their lifetime. Natriuretic peptide (NP) levels, including NT-proBNP and NT-proANP, are associated with several cardiovascular conditions, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and hypertension (1, 2). They have also been linked to atrial fibrillation (AF) and cardiovascular risk in patients with AF. NPs vary in their sensitivity to different phenotypes of AF progression, while NT-proANP appears to be a specific biomarker of AF progression (1).
NT-proANP a biomarker in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation
In a recent study, researchers used mass spectrometric proteome profiling to investigate molecular differences between the right and left atria in patients with persistent AF. The analysis revealed that persistent AF is associated with a marked homogenization of right and left atrial proteomes; molecular differences that typically distinguish the two atria appear to diminish as AF progresses (3). This finding provides new insight into the atrial remodeling that occurs in persistent AF and highlights the value of advanced proteomics for understanding disease mechanisms at the tissue level.
The Biomedica NT-proANP ELISA was used in this study to quantify plasma NT-proANP in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. NT-proANP is an important cardiac biomarker linked to atrial function and volume regulation.
Key findings:
- NT-proANP was significantly up-regulated in plasma samples from patients with persistent AF.
- While the left atrium is the traditional therapeutic target, atrial remodeling affects both the left and right atrium, suggesting the right atrium may deserve greater attention in clinical management.
